Tutors from Notre Dame University of Maryland School of Nursing |
Wolfe Street Academy, the Baltimore Curriculum Project and Notre Dame University of Maryland have formed a new partnership to create a wonderful tutoring program at Wolfe Street Academy. Kathy Stroup, Wolfe Street Academy Director of Extended Student Services, and BCP Academic Coach Sue Lattimore are working with Rosemary Byron (Instructional Support Teacher at Wolfe Street) and Dr. Sabita Persaud in leading this effort.
We kicked off the program with an orientation/training on Jan. 30th -- delicious refreshments! --- followed by a "Get-to-Know-You" session with the tutors and their small groups of students. The 15 Notre Dame nursing students were VERY enthusiastic, and actually brought 5 more volunteers than expected, enabling us to reach a total of 33 students, with targeted academic games and homework support designed to meet students individual needs -- using educational games and songs to reinforce key skills identified by the students' teachers.
Since Thursday, Feb. 6, the tutors have been returning every week from 3:30-5:00. This is a wonderful boost for the Wolfe Street students, and the Notre Dame volunteers report that they feel very effective and supported by Wolfe's teachers. Every 3rd or 4th session, the tutors will have a mini-training session to teach them additional games, cheers, and strategies for helping the students succeed at skills that are directly linked to what they need to succeed in their classroom programs. Most recently, the volunteers completed a training on Thursday, February 27th.
